The poutama is a traditional toi māori motif commonly used across a wide range of mediums, from weaving to carving. Poutama comprises a staircase pattern which symbolises both whakapapa (genealogy), and also the pursuit of knowledge and levels of advancement and growth. It is a symbol of aspiration and hope which I find grounding and inspiring.
