Tino Rangatiratanga
Digital Collage by Kahu
This pattern is inspired by the Tino Rangatiratanga flag, which was designed by Hiraina Marsden, Jan Smith and Linda Munn in 1989 to represent the three realms of being recognised within te ao Māori.
The black section of the flag, here represented by the night sky centred on the matariki star cluster, symbolises te kore (the void / realm of potential being). The red section, here represented by a rising sun at dawn, symbolises te whai ao (the dawn, the realm of becoming). The white koru pattern in the centre of the design symbolises te ao marama (the world of light, the realm of being and life). The koru is also symbolic of a curling fern frond, representing the unfolding of new life, hope for the future, and the process of renewal.
The Tino Rangatiratanga design is used by Kākahu Kāhu with the explicit permission of the copyright holder Linda Munn.
